NRI to Expand Open Source Platform "OpenStandia" Business
— Offering OSS Packages and Additional Services —
May 9, 2006
Nomura Research Institute, Ltd.
Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. (NRI: Tokyo; Akihisa Fujinuma, President, CEO & COO) will expand its business related to open source software (OSS). This business expansion is based on the open source platform "OpenStandia,*1" to enable the development of highly reliable enterprise system infrastructure using a combination of OSS such as Tomcat, JBoss and MySQL.
Ahead of other major solution providers in Japan, NRI developed two OSS packages and started to provide modification patches for each system failure. In addition, starting in July, the technical support services of OpenStandia will be enhanced in cooperation with partner companies.
Major points of service expansion
1. Offering open source software packages
NRI developed two packages*2 that enable rapid installation of OSS even in large-scale enterprise systems. "OpenStandia/Application Server" is a primary package of Java-based Web application servers that have so far been provided under OpenStandia. "OpenStandia/BI Server" is a Business Intelligence solution package that enables the installation of OSS, and facilitates the development of a multi-dimensional information system that analyzes a vast volume of data from various dimensions. These packages are offered free-of-charge. NRI provides services*3 for these packages such as technical support and maintenance support on a fee basis.
2. Providing modification patches for each system failure
As part of its maintenance support service, NRI provides modification patches for each system failure to quickly resolve highly critical faults that cannot be avoided by changing settings or simple workarounds. Furthermore, the maintenance support service will be provided during a maximum period of 7 years for long-term system operations.
3. Enhancing services by expanding the number of partner companies
In cooperation with hardware vendors, Linux distributors, system integrators, etc., NRI will enhance its support structure for the introduction of OpenStandia and maintenance support service starting in July.
Through such service expansion, NRI expects to introduce OpenStandia in about 50 companies during this fiscal year.
NRI will continue to support open source communities, meet OSS needs in enterprise systems and contribute to the development and spread of OSS.

What is “OpenStandia?” |
| |
“OpenStandia” is system infrastructure to
develop high-quality OSS-based enterprise systems. After verifying the
operation of a combination
of selected OSS based on NRI's own ratings, OpenStandia is provided
as a package in which the parameter design was implemented and the components
necessary to develop system infrastructure were installed. The utilization
of OpenStandia enables the reduction of system costs and the development
of high-quality system infrastructure. NRI also provides support for
the design and development of systems using OpenStandia as well as maintenance
support. |

Two OpenStandia Packages |
| |
1) OpenStandia/Application Server
This is a package of Java-based Web application servers that consists
of application development frameworks such as Tomcat and JBoss,
and common Java libraries. In addition to the software line-up,
which has already been verified, various documents and guidelines
to support system development as well as management tools are provided.
The use of this package will improve the efficiency of system development
and enable the establishment of high-quality system infrastructure.
Multiple platforms are supported including not only Linux but also
Windows and Solaris. |
 |
2) OpenStandia/BI Server
This is an all-in-one Business Intelligence package that was developed
by combining an open source database engine with an OLAP engine.
This package enables the development of a multi-dimensional information
system that analyzes a vast volume of data from various dimensions
at low cost. Generally, a company takes a high risk in introducing
a costly information analytical tool at a stage where its cost
effectiveness is not yet clear. However, OpenStandia/BI Server
enables the development of a system at a low cost and in a short
period that performs analytical processing such as for sales and
marketing information by simple Web browser operations. |
