New Year's Message from the President, Akihisa Fujinuma
January 6, 2003
Nomura Research Institute, Ltd.
Ever since my inauguration as the president in April 2002, I have approached my duties with an emphasis on installing a new management scheme, bolstering our capabilities to provide "total solutions," and expanding our Asian business. Fortunately, these efforts are steadily yielding results. In our mid-term financial statement for the year ending on March 31, 2003, we were able to attain our target for operating profit, an item of the highest priority. We are deeply indebted to our clients and shareholders, without whose support this would not have been possible.
In 2003, the Japanese economy is expected to remain in its slump; NRI’s economists are projecting a real GDP growth rate of -0.1 percent this year. However, the restructuring of the business and industry, based on the disposal of bad loans, is slowly but surely moving ahead. Even in these dire economic straits, many of Japanese business are achieving growth by making innovative efforts and taking risks. By providing "total solutions" that encompass services in all stages from consulting to system development and operation, the mission of NRI is to support the creation and use of knowledge and information as the source of additional values in corporate activities, and thereby, to assist the creative endeavors of our clients. While fulfilling our clients’ distinctive needs, we also intend to support them to reduce their information system costs by providing de facto standard systems in the industry. A case in point is "THE STAR," the revised version of our on-line system for shared use in the securities industry, will be placed into regular operation in 2003. In our system investment for this year, we are going to put precedence on such industry-wide, shared-use systems. Although Japan's information service industry has been doing business mainly in the domestic market so far, the field exhibits an expansion of the market in China and other parts of Asia as well as a globalization of activities. In this industry, too, Japanese market is seeing the rise of quality low-cost labor in China and other Asian countries as the business there begins to take off. In 2002, the first year of expansion of our business in Asia, we set up new affiliates in both Shanghai and Beijing in addition to our existing five other ones in the region, and also set measures of system development in China. In 2003, as the second year, we are planning to proceed for the further advancement of our business in Asia. By constantly honing our capabilities, NRI Group are determined to maintain our high level of professionalism and commitment to quality, in order to continue providing our clients with optimal solutions.
