On July 29, Nomura Research Institute Ltd. (NRI: Tokyo, Akihisa Fujinuma, President, CEO & COO) began providing "THE STAR," a next generation securities system service to users. THE STAR is a system that supports the overall work processing of retail securities firms. "THE STAR" is the brand name for the securities system service provided by NRI, which was built with the objective of becoming the defacto standard system of the securities industry.
THE STAR has realized dramatic innovations in both hardware and application software compared to similar traditional services. The system platform of THE STAR, with strong connectability, enables easy connection of external and internal systems containing different equipment and environments. It also realizes advanced system services both speedily and at a low cost. The hardware configuration of the system has been transformed from the traditional one which was centered on the host computer to a configuration built around servers in line with work objectives. This has improved the maintenance efficiency, and achieved a drastic reduction in operation costs.
THE STAR also realized Straight Through Processing (STP) , enabling the front compliance checking (including reviews of customer account openings, management of insider registration, etc.) and real collateral and real funds management. This will promote a reformation in the cost and risk structures of securities firms and makes operations possible at a low cost.
Moreover, THE STAR was designed to easily enable for new products, such as investment trusts, to be added, as well as to customize the service for targeted customers. Use of this system will contribute to improved earnings by allowing a reduction in back office personnel and enabling overloaded salesperson to focus on the work they should be focused on.
Furthermore, reductions in running costs and low cost operations have been achieved through the development and maintenance of applications in China, and the aforementioned centering of the configuration on servers. Consequently, securities firms can realize a major reduction in their total operation costs.
THE STAR is provided by three means: .
(1) SI components ... A desired scope of THE STAR can be used.
(2) Outsourcing service ... A single company uses THE STAR The operation is consigned to NRI.
(3) STAR-IV (ASP service) ... Multiple companies use "THE STAR", which is operated by NRI.
STAR-IV is the successor to STAR-III service, a comprehensive securities online system that began being provided in 1995, which has been used by over twenty companies. STAR-IV, which service was launched on July 29 as well, has been already used by several security firms. STAR-IV has realized Web compatibility of the screen, integration of request information, and real time covenants. By the first half of 2003, STAR-IV will enable STP of work by front compliance at the time of orders, and real collateral management and will also be compliant with T+1.
